Gap between Education and Workplace Skills

A few weeks ago there was an ad on television showing job misplacement; where chef is working as a barber, cricketer as a washer man. When I saw it 1st time I started laughing, but after a little while I found that ad very near to reality.

Just take a minute break from our hush – hush schedule and look around, we can find so many people stuck in wrong career profile, many of them even do not posses basic skills required for their jobs. We can see engineers working in finance sectors, arts graduate in marketing field and then list goes on………

It has become a common place to see people frustrated with their jobs, feeling of incompetency for job, feeling misplaced, depressed, stressed. And then question arise why so? Who is responsible? Can we change it? If yes, then How?

Today’s education system in India is majorly based on theory. When a student graduates with the degree what he or she knows about a field is all theory (many times it is also out dated), without practical exposure. There is lack of understanding of skills to become better professionals and asking for professional help is not preferred by lot of families even today.

Many times it is seen that a student pursue education in one field but later when he/ she comes in job market to find no jobs then he/she force to take up a job where his education and skills are not in use.
Important question is who is responsible for it? List is big but important components include education system, circumstances and we ourselves. There is great a need of change required in these to bridge the gap between education and workplace skills.

Our education system need to be more practical oriented, with a curriculum that helps in understanding and developing skills required for jobs. But we should not forget that we are the most important part of this system, it is our own responsibility to become aware of skills we need at work place and develop them. We even need to asses our inherited traits and skills and choose suitable education and career stream, to be able to choose jobs related to course work studied.

If we can bridge gap in workplace and education skills then one can enjoy job and their productivity will be high. This will certainly lead to job satisfaction.

SELF LOVE: Being head over heels with yourself

More often confused with self obsession and selfishness, self love is loving, understanding, respecting & accepting your self. As opposed to self obsession where a person  is self centered, pursues selfish motives, ignores his/her negatives & does nothing to move towards growth or self actualization, Self love is inviting mirrors of reality, accepting your flaws and working to be a better person.
For a healthy, strong & successful personality it is vital for us to practice self love. Ask your self one question, what are the qualities in you that makes you love yourself. Make a list; if at a point you find it difficult to answer reverse the question and ask yourself, why should I not love myself? You love your self for the fact that you are aware of your strengths & weakness, you accept them & you are ready to improve, this realization puts you in state of contentment.
Self love comes from self actualization; simply put you know where you are, where you want to be & the path that will take you to your destination. Growth is what we strive for, my father once righty said “our lives should not be like a pond which is stagnant; rather it should be like a river, flowing continuously, growing continuously.
How often do we come across people who use ‘I Know’ in a conversation? The question arises do they ‘really know’. The other day I was speaking to a friend who was going through a rough patch, in every sentence she said, she knew what the problem was. After a 1 hr discussion I felt she was already very well aware of what the root cause of her problem was. Lastly I confronted her saying “if you know, then do something, act on it & resolve the matter”, to this she said ‘I know, but I cant help it’ Gah!!! She knows everything. Growth only happens if you move ahead. If you do not step forward; you will always be in the same place.
Ways in which you can invite growth; be open to learning, make your own decisions, assume responsibilities for your action, transcend your boundaries; come out of your comfort zone, forgive yourself, practice empathy, be thankful; live a life of gratitude.
Self Love, if you understood it, Congratulations!!! You started your journey of being Happy.
“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.” John Lennon.

Passing Board Exams (10th or 12th) Privately – Good or Bad?

Many times we come across advertisements in the form of pamphlets, hordings, TV and radio Ads, assuring people to help them pass their SSC/CBSE/HSC privately. However are these claims true? If yes then is giving 10th or 12th board exams privately advisable?

Let us take two cases:-

Case 1: Students who have passed their 10th or 11th and want to give 12th privately without attending regular school or college.
  • If a student has passed 10th, and for some reason was not able to pursue studies, the student can give 12th directly anytime. (Note: for giving 12th through correspondence there should be atleast 1 yr gap between passing the 10th & appearing for the 12thexams)
  • The student can approach a private agency or directly a college for registration as a private candidate for HSC or equivalent 12th board. Just make sure the private agency involved registers you as a private candidate from a recognized & affiliated college. The mark sheet which a student will obtain is same as a regular student would get, also the student must take a Leaving certificate (LC) of that particular college under which s/he appeared the HSC board. After this the student can apply in for any of the degree colleges.

Case 2: Students who have failed 10th and want to give their 12th or for those who have failed their 10th or 12th and want to reappear but privately.
  • If a student has failed 10th it is important for him/her to re-appear for the examinations clear the 10th & then pursue further. Under no circumstances will a student be able to clear 12th if s/he has not cleared his/her 10th.
  • Students getting admission in 11th on 10th ATKT:10th failed student can fill the admission form for 11th regular junior college, if s/he has failed in 1 or 2 subjects. This admission depends on the college, its cut off & the availability of seats. The student will have clear the 10th exam before being allowed to appear for HSC.
In conclusion it can be said that giving 10th or 12th privately involves no potential risk if given through recognized and affiliated school/colleges. However regular college is always advisable as it not only gives a student social exposure but also prepares him/her for vigorous, scheduled & structured learning, which helps them to pursue further degree courses.
