Graduate
Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination that tests the
complete understanding of several undergraduate subjects/courses in Engineering
and Technology.
The GATE score is used
for admissions to various post-graduate programmes such as M.E., M.Tech, direct
Ph.D. in Indian higher education institutes with financial assistance provided
by MHRD and other Government agencies.
The score is also sometimes used by government and public sector
departments for employment screening.
GATE is
conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven IITs (IIT
Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT
Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of
Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of
India.
GATE 2013
is going to be conducted in 21 different streams. They are:
- AE – Aerospace Engineering
- AG – Agricultural Engineering
- AR – Architecture and Planning
- BT – Biotechnology
- CE – Civil Engineering
- CH – Chemical Engineering
- CS – Computer Science and Information Technology
- CY – Chemistry
- EC – Electronics and Communication Engineering
- EE – Electrical Engineering
- GG – Geology and Geophysics
- IN – Instrumentation Engineering
- MA – Mathematics
- ME – Mechanical Engineering
- MN – Mining Engineering
- MT – Metallurgical Engineering
- PH – Physics
- PI – Production and Industrial Engineering
- TF – Textile Engineering and Fibre Science
- XE – Engineering Sciences (Engineering Mathematics <compulsory>, Fluid Mechanics, Materials Science, Solid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Polymer Science and Engineering, Food Technology)
- XL – Life Sciences (Chemistry <compulsory>, Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology, Food Technology)
Note:
- A Candidate can apply for only ONE of the 21 papers listed above.
- A candidate appearing in the XE paper has to answer Engineering Mathematics, General Aptitude, and any two of these subjects: Fluid Mechanics, Materials Science, Solid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Polymer Science and Engineering, Food Technology
- A candidate appearing in the XL paper has to answer Chemistry, General Aptitude, and any two of these subjects: Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology, Food Technology
- The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration which contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.
- The question paper will consist of only objective questions.
- All the papers will contain few questions that test the General Aptitude (Language and Analytical Skills), apart from the core subject of the paper.
- The GATE examination is conducted in online and offline mode.
- ONLINE Examination: A computer based test (CBT) where the candidate will use a computer mouse to choose a correct answer or enter a numerical answer via a virtual keypad. 15 streams i.e. AE, AG, AR, BT, CE, CH, CY, GG, MA, MN, MT, PH, TF, XE, and XL are conducted Online.
- OFFLINE Examination: A paper based examination where the candidate will mark the correct answer out of four options in an Optical Response Sheet (ORS) by darkening the appropriate bubble with a pen. 6 Streams i.e. CS, EC, EE, IN , ME, and PI are conducted Offline.

- GATE 2013 Online Application Submission Begins: 1st September 2012.
- Last date for Submission of Online Application Form (Website Closure): 30th September 2012
- Receipt of printed version of ONLINE Application at GATE Offices: 8th October 2012
- GATE 2013 Online Exam Date: 20th January 2013
- GATE 2013 Offline Exam Date: 10th February 2013
- Announcement of GATE 2013 results: 15th March 2013
