Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE 2013)



Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination that tests the complete understanding of several undergraduate subjects/courses in Engineering and Technology.   

The GATE score is used for admissions to various post-graduate programmes such as M.E., M.Tech, direct Ph.D. in Indian higher education institutes with financial assistance provided by MHRD and other Government agencies.  The score is also sometimes used by government and public sector departments for employment screening.

GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven IITs (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

GATE 2013 is going to be conducted in 21 different streams. They are:

  1. AE – Aerospace Engineering
  2. AG –  Agricultural Engineering
  3. AR – Architecture and Planning
  4. BT – Biotechnology
  5. CE – Civil Engineering
  6. CH – Chemical Engineering
  7. CS – Computer Science and Information Technology
  8. CY – Chemistry
  9. EC – Electronics and Communication Engineering
  10. EE – Electrical Engineering
  11. GG – Geology and Geophysics
  12. IN – Instrumentation Engineering
  13. MA – Mathematics
  14. ME – Mechanical Engineering
  15. MN – Mining Engineering
  16. MT – Metallurgical Engineering
  17. PH – Physics
  18. PI – Production and Industrial Engineering
  19. TF – Textile Engineering and Fibre Science
  20. XE – Engineering Sciences (Engineering Mathematics <compulsory>, Fluid Mechanics, Materials Science, Solid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Polymer Science and Engineering, Food Technology)
  21. XL – Life Sciences (Chemistry <compulsory>, Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology, Food Technology) 


Note: 
  • A Candidate can apply for only ONE of the 21 papers listed above.
  • A candidate appearing in the XE paper has to answer Engineering Mathematics, General Aptitude, and any two of these subjects: Fluid Mechanics, Materials Science, Solid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Polymer Science and Engineering, Food Technology
  • A candidate appearing in the XL paper has to answer Chemistry, General Aptitude, and any two of these subjects: Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology, Food Technology
  • The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration which contains 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks.
  • The question paper will consist of only objective questions.
  • All the papers will contain few questions that test the General Aptitude (Language and Analytical Skills), apart from the core subject of the paper.
  • The GATE examination is conducted in online and offline mode.
    • ONLINE Examination: A computer based test (CBT) where the candidate will use a computer mouse to choose a correct answer or enter a numerical answer via a virtual keypad. 15 streams i.e. AE, AG, AR, BT, CE, CH, CY, GG, MA, MN, MT, PH, TF, XE, and XL are conducted Online.
    • OFFLINE Examination:  A paper based examination where the candidate will mark the correct answer out of four options in an Optical Response Sheet (ORS) by darkening the appropriate bubble with a pen. 6 Streams i.e. CS, EC, EE, IN , ME, and PI are conducted Offline.

  • Last date for Submission of Online Application Form (Website Closure): 30th September 2012 
  • Receipt of printed version of ONLINE Application at GATE Offices: 8th October 2012 
  • GATE 2013 Online Exam Date: 20th January 2013 
  • GATE 2013 Offline Exam Date: 10th February 2013
  • Announcement of GATE 2013 results: 15th March 2013

World's Best Universities : QS World University Rankings 2012


QS World University Rankings has published the latest world university rankings for year 2012.
  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is the new leader in QS World University Rankings and has overtaken both Cambridge and Harvard.
  2. Universities from United States continue to dominate the rankings, however, four of the top six universities are from United Kingdom. 
  3. There is an extraordinary increate of almost 10 percent in international students numbers at the top 100 universities.
